Publication Ethics

Al Iʿjāz: Journal of Revelation Studies is a peer‑reviewed national journal published in print and online twice a year. This statement sets out the ethical responsibilities of everyone involved in publishing in the journal: authors, the editor in chief, editorial board members, peer reviewers, and the publisher (Department of Qur’anic and Revelation Studies, Faculty of Ushuluddin and Islamic Studies, Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara, Medan, Indonesia).

Ethical Guidelines for Journal Publication

Publishing in Al Iʿjāz builds a coherent and reputable body of knowledge and reflects the quality of authors’ work and their supporting institutions. All parties including authors, editors, reviewers, the publisher, and the wider scholarly community must uphold the highest ethical standards. The Department of Qur’anic and Revelation Studies, Faculty of Ushuluddin and Islamic Studies, Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara, as publisher of Al Iʿjāz, takes its stewardship of the publishing process seriously and guarantees that advertising or other commercial considerations never influence editorial decisions.

Editors’ Responsibilities

  • Publication decisions rely only on scholarly merit, relevance, and legal considerations such as libel, copyright, and plagiarism.

  • Fair play: Manuscripts are assessed without regard to authors’ race, gender, religious belief, ethnic origin, citizenship, or political philosophy.

  • Confidentiality: Information about submitted manuscripts is shared only with those directly involved in the evaluation process.

  • Conflicts of interest: Editors must not use unpublished material from submitted manuscripts in their own research without written permission from the authors.

Reviewers’ Responsibilities

  • Contribution to decisions: Peer review supports editorial judgment and helps authors improve their work.

  • Promptness: Reviewers who cannot complete a review promptly should inform the editor and withdraw.

  • Confidentiality: Manuscripts under review are confidential documents.

  • Objectivity: Reviews should be objective and well supported, avoiding personal criticism.

  • Source acknowledgement: Reviewers should point out relevant literature not cited by the authors and alert the editor to any potential overlap with other work.

  • Conflicts of interest: Reviewers must decline to review manuscripts where they have competing interests.

Authors’ Responsibilities

  • Reporting standards: Present an accurate, detailed, and unbiased account of the research.

  • Originality and plagiarism: Submit only original work and properly cite others’ ideas and words.

  • Multiple or simultaneous submission: Do not submit the same manuscript to more than one journal or publish the same research in multiple venues.

  • Source acknowledgement: Cite all influential publications.

  • Authorship: List as authors only those who made significant contributions to the study and ensure that all coauthors approve the final manuscript and its submission.

  • Conflicts of interest: Disclose any financial or substantive conflicts that could influence the results.

  • Errors in published work: Promptly inform the editor of any significant errors discovered after publication and cooperate in retracting or correcting the paper.

Adherence to COPE

Al Iʿjāz follows the Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing and the Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics COPE. All ethical provisions above are implemented in line with COPE guidance. Any suspected misconduct such as plagiarism, data fabrication, conflicts of interest, or authorship disputes will be handled using COPE flowcharts and procedures.
