Artificial Intelligence (AI) Use Policy

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) USE POLICY

FISITEK: Jurnal Ilmu Fisika dan Teknologi

1. Purpose and Scope

FISITEK: Jurnal Ilmu Fisika dan Teknologi recognizes the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in scientific research and academic publishing. While AI technologies can support research and manuscript preparation, their use must not compromise the originality, accuracy, or integrity of scientific work.

This policy provides guidelines for authors, editors, and reviewers on the responsible use of AI throughout the publication process. This policy draws on the ethical guidance of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and Elsevier's policies on generative AI in scholarly publishing, while taking into account Indonesia's national journal accreditation requirements.

2. Use of AI by Authors

Authors may use AI tools to assist with research and manuscript preparation, provided that they maintain full control over their work and take responsibility for its content.

Permitted uses include:

  • Improving language, grammar, translation, and manuscript formatting.
  • Supporting preliminary literature searches and reference management.
  • Assisting with programming, mathematical calculations, data processing, and numerical simulations.
  • Preparing conceptual diagrams, explanatory illustrations, and scientific visualizations, subject to verification.

The following practices are prohibited:

  • Generating complete manuscripts without substantial original intellectual contributions from the authors.
  • Fabricating or falsifying experimental data, simulation results, scientific images, references, or research findings.
  • Using AI-generated content to conceal plagiarism or misrepresent the originality of research.
  • Presenting unverified AI-generated information, interpretations, or conclusions as established scientific findings.

Authors must verify the accuracy of all AI-assisted content, including equations, calculations, scientific explanations, and references. Citations must be checked against their original sources.

AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors because they cannot take responsibility for scientific contributions. The authors remain fully accountable for the originality, accuracy, and integrity of their manuscripts.

3. AI in Scientific Research and Data Integrity

The use of AI in physics experiments, computational modeling, numerical simulations, and data analysis must meet accepted standards of scientific validity, transparency, and reproducibility.

Authors are required to ensure that:

  1. Research data are authentic, traceable, and free from fabrication or falsification.
  2. AI-assisted calculations, simulations, and analytical results are scientifically verified.
  3. Figures, graphs, and visualizations accurately represent the original research data.
  4. AI-generated images are not presented as genuine experimental observations or primary scientific evidence.
  5. AI-based research methods are adequately described to allow scientific evaluation and reproducibility.

AI-generated conceptual illustrations may be used when their accuracy has been verified, their use is clearly acknowledged in the figure captions, and the authors have the necessary rights to use them.

When machine learning, deep learning, or other AI techniques are part of the research methodology, authors must explain the models, datasets, procedures, evaluation methods, and validation processes in the Methods section.

Authors must also respect privacy, confidentiality, and copyright. Personal data, confidential research information, and copyrighted materials must not be submitted to AI services without appropriate authorization and safeguards.

4. Transparency in the Use of AI

Authors are responsible for ensuring transparency and accountability when using generative AI or AI-assisted technologies in scientific research and manuscript preparation. Any substantive use of AI must be clearly acknowledged, including its purpose and contribution to the research or manuscript.

All AI-assisted content must be carefully reviewed and verified by the authors to ensure accuracy, originality, and scientific integrity. Routine spelling, grammar correction, and conventional reference management tools do not require disclosure.

Authors remain fully responsible for the content and findings of their work, regardless of whether AI tools were used.

5. Restrictions on AI Use by Editors

FISITEK editors must maintain confidentiality, impartiality, and independent judgment throughout the editorial process.

AI tools may only be used for general administrative tasks that do not involve confidential materials, such as preparing standard correspondence templates or public announcements.

Editors are prohibited from:

  1. Uploading unpublished manuscripts, research data, review reports, or confidential editorial correspondence to unauthorized AI platforms.
  2. Using AI to replace independent scientific assessment or editorial judgment.
  3. Relying solely on AI-generated recommendations when deciding whether to accept, revise, or reject a manuscript.

All editorial decisions must be made by human editors based on scientific merit, peer-review reports, and the journal's editorial policies. Similarity-checking software may be used as a screening tool, but its results must be evaluated by the editors.

6. Prohibition of AI Use by Peer Reviewers

FISITEK prohibits reviewers from using AI or generative AI tools during the peer-review process.

Reviewers must not use AI to read, summarize, analyze, or evaluate submitted manuscripts; assess research quality; prepare review reports; or make publication recommendations.

Reviewers are also prohibited from uploading or sharing manuscripts, figures, tables, datasets, supplementary materials, or confidential editorial information with AI platforms.

Peer review must be conducted independently, based on the reviewer's scientific expertise, critical assessment, and professional judgment.

All submitted materials must remain confidential. Violations of this policy may result in the termination of a review assignment or other appropriate editorial actions.

7. Policy Violations, Editorial Actions, and Implementation

FISITEK takes the misuse of AI seriously, particularly when it involves fabricated data, false references, manipulated scientific images, plagiarism, breaches of confidentiality, or undisclosed substantive AI use.

Suspected violations will be examined by the editorial team based on available evidence and established publication ethics procedures. Authors will be given an opportunity to provide explanations, original research data, or supporting documents before a decision is made.

Depending on the nature and severity of the violation, the journal may request corrections, reject a manuscript, publish a correction or expression of concern, or retract a published article when necessary.

AI-detection software will not be used as the sole basis for determining misconduct. Editorial decisions must involve human assessment and follow the journal's publication ethics policy and relevant COPE guidance.

This policy takes effect upon its official publication on the FISITEK website and applies to subsequent manuscript submissions and editorial processes. It does not apply retroactively to articles published before its implementation.

The editorial team will review and update this policy periodically to reflect developments in AI technology, publication ethics, and applicable regulations.
