INTEGRATION OF SABR AND GRIT IN LONG-TERM MARRIAGE

Dyah Wulandhari, Muhammad Zein Permana

Abstract

This study explores how the integration of the spiritual value of patience (sabr) and psychological perseverance (grit) sustains relational stability in couples within long-term marriages. Employing a qualitative approach through a constructivist lens, an in-depth case study was conducted on a married couple who had been married for three decades (30 years) and successfully navigated various structural crises, ranging from a unilateral career transition to degenerative health challenges. The findings indicate that long-term marital resilience does not rely on surface-level compatibility, but rather on a structured cognitive-spiritual construction. This includes premarital theological inoculation (Mitsaqon Ghalizha), systemic ego deferral, and the reframing of physical suffering through the concepts of offensive-active sabr and marital detachment. The integration between personal grit and transcendental resilience transforms structural crises into a shared growth curriculum, while offering an effective psychosocial adaptation model to nurture intimacy in the second half of the marital life cycle.
