Abstract

Abstract

The concept of objectivity when applied to environmental reporting has been debated in academic circles. Some consider that objectivity cannot be upheld in environmental journalism. Around the same time, two major fires occurred in two different places: Kalimantan and the Amazon. These two events both threatened the environment and caused considerable negative environmental, social and economic impacts. For the media and audiences in Indonesia, the fires in Kalimantan have more proximity, because in addition to being closer in distance, it also occurred within the country's territory. Whereas the forest fires in the Amazon cannot be directly felt by the media and audiences here. This makes the study of the objectivity of the reporting of these two events interesting. The results of this study indicate that BBC Indonesia can apply objectivity well in reporting on environmental issues, both nationally and internationally. The media's obligation to defend the environment is fairly well presented in both cases. Reporting on environmental issues, in addition to reporting actual conditions, the media is also expected to be able to mobilize public environmental awareness to protect the environment and the potential dangers of environmental damage that have occurred so far.
