Focus and Scope
Istishlah: Journal Hukum Islam is a scholarly publication managed by the Faculty of Sharia and Law, State Islamic University of North Sumatra (UIN Sumatera Utara), Indonesia. This journal serves as a medium for disseminating research findings, academic studies, and critical thoughts in the fields of Islamic law and Sharia sciences.
The primary aims of this journal are to:
Provide an academic platform for researchers, scholars, and practitioners to publish their scientific works.
Promote the development of Islamic legal studies that address contemporary societal dynamics.
Facilitate the exchange of ideas between Islamic law and related academic disciplines.
Scope of Studies
The topics covered by this journal include, but are not limited to:
Law
Islamic Family Law (al-Ahwal al-Syakhshiyyah).
Islamic Economic Law (Fiqh al-Mu’amalat).
Islamic Constitutional Law (al-Siyasah al-Syar’iyyah).
Islamic Criminal Law (al-Jinayah).
Other relevant areas of Islamic legal studies.

Peer Review Process
All submitted manuscripts first undergo an initial evaluation by the editor. At this stage, the editor will assess whether the manuscript fits the journal’s focus and scope, and whether it contains any major methodological flaws or violations of publication ethics.
Manuscripts that pass the initial screening will be sent to at least two reviewers with expertise in the relevant field, following a double-blind peer review process. In this system, both the authors’ and reviewers’ identities are kept confidential to ensure an objective and unbiased assessment.
Reviewers will evaluate various aspects of the manuscript, including research originality, scholarly contribution, relevance to the field, methodological clarity, data analysis, and accuracy of presentation. Based on the reviewers’ feedback, the editor will convey one of the following decisions to the author: accept without revision, accept with minor revisions, revise and resubmit (major revisions), or reject.
Revised manuscripts will be re-checked by the editor and, if necessary, sent back to reviewers for verification. An article will only be published after receiving final approval from the editorial board and meeting all the journal’s quality standards.
Open Access Policy
This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.
Publication Frequency
Istishlah: Jurnal Hukum Islam is published twice a year (biannually), in two regular issues:
First Issue: January–June (published in June)
Second Issue: July–December (published in December)
Each edition contains a collection of peer-reviewed articles that meet the journal’s academic standards and fall within its focus and scope. The journal maintains a consistent publication schedule to ensure timely dissemination of scholarly works and to support the continuous development of Islamic legal studies.
