PERAN ULAMA DALAM MEMPROMOSIKAN DEMOKRASI DAN HAM DALAM MASYARAKAT

Abstract


This study examines the role of Islamic scholars (ulama) in promoting democracy and human rights (HR) within Indonesian society. The focus of the analysis is directed toward the involvement of ulama in fostering public awareness to contribute to democratic development by integrating Islamic values, as well as their efforts to uphold human rights in accordance with the principles of social justice in Islam. The research employs a qualitative method with a library research approach, utilizing relevant national journal sources. The findings indicate that ulama play a significant role as guardians of democratic values through fatwas, preaching (dakwah), and education, as well as advocates for human rights by emphasizing maqashid al-shari’ah in protecting fundamental human rights. Challenges faced by ulama include the rise of radical ideologies through globalization and social media, as well as the dynamic socio-cultural transformation within society. Strategies that can be implemented include formal and non-formal education, moderate preaching, and interfaith collaboration. The study concludes that ulama hold a strategic position in strengthening Pancasila-based democracy and ensuring respect for human rights in national and state life
