Abstract

Environmental exposure, particularly ultraviolet radiation and pollution, can promote oxidative stress in the skin and contribute to premature skin aging, highlighting the need for safe natural antioxidants in preventive skin care. Bintangur (Calophyllum inophyllum L.) leaves contain bioactive compounds with potential antioxidant properties and may be developed as a botanical ingredient for topical preparations. This study aimed to formulate and evaluate the physical characteristics and stability of Bintangur leaf ethanol extract in sheet mask preparations. Bintangur leaves were extracted by maceration using 96% ethanol and formulated into sheet masks at concentrations of 0.5% (FI), 1.0% (FII), and 1.5% (FIII), with F0 serving as a negative control. The formulations were evaluated for organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, skin irritation, and four-week stability. All formulations remained homogeneous, with initial pH values ranging from 6.70 to 7.42 and mean viscosities ranging from 533.33 to 621.33 cP. During four weeks of storage, all formulations maintained homogeneity and acceptable pH values, although slight brownish discoloration occurred in extract-containing formulations. No irritation was observed among the 10 panelists. FI (0.5%) showed the most favorable overall stability, particularly the smallest pH change during storage. These findings support further investigation of Bintangur leaf extract sheet masks as a locally sourced botanical formulation for preventive skin care.
