Abstract

Research is motivated by the continued need to strengthen students' mental health literacy amidst the increasing use of digital media and Artificial Intelligence (AI) as sources of information. This study aims to analyze the level of students' mental health literacy, barriers to accessing information and professional assistance, digital media usage patterns, students' perceptions and experiences in using AI, and formulate AI-based digital communication strategies to improve students' mental health literacy. The study used a qualitative approach involving students as Focus Group Discussion (FGD) participants, psychologists, and communication practitioners. Data were collected through FGDs and in-depth interviews, then analyzed through the stages of data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, and strengthened through source triangulation. The results show that students already have a basic understanding of mental health, but still need to be strengthened in understanding psychological conditions, recognizing the need for professional assistance, selecting credible information sources, and reducing stigma. Digital media is a source of easily accessible information, while AI is seen as having advantages in speed, convenience, flexibility, and interactivity, but still raises concerns about accuracy, credibility, data security, and the limitations of AI. Based on the synthesis of findings, five AI-based digital communication strategies were formulated: personalized mental health communication, multi-platform digital communication, AI-based interactive messaging, educational communication to reduce stigma and increase mental health literacy, and strengthening information credibility. This research confirms that AI has the potential to be a supporting medium for student mental health communication, not a substitute for professional staff.
